Fix Ya Face

from How to Outrun a Supernova by Khemmeta

about

This song was written in loving memory of my partner, Marissa Snoddy.

lyrics

all his other
masks disappeared
he was looking for the one where
the laughs turn to tears
cabinets were bare,
every flat surface cleared
but the tragic Melpomene faces
stacked up for years

he stood at the stratosphere,
balancing on the sadness
quite aware that the precarious
faces could lead to crashing
collapsing onto land from that
altitude was no laughing matter
splatting on impact
was all that would make the chapter sadder

so he went to rapper mode
using phrases like a
ballerina’s toes
keeping gravity below
and the tragedy unfolds
as he gradually arose
so ungrounded normal life
looked like ants seeking holes

and he’s outta his depth
choking on clouds in his breath
high as heaven still beneath the looming
shadow of death
and he fears, all the evils
of land and sky
contingency is spawning angel wings and
planning to fly

and the crying visage multiplied
under his feet
and the distance to the surface
kept redoubling each
passing second a new testament to
tragedy’s reach
far as the length between the summit
to the sands on the beach

and he’s lacking in heat
getting closer to the vacuum
where no man can see grief
breaking the habit of breathing
nommo downer bars forever
cuz he’s downed at the peak
this was meant to be uplifting
so it sounds like he’s free

and he stay lit. when the day grim.
kinda hates it. fix ya face kid.
and he stay grim. when the day’s lit.
he can’t take it. fix ya face kid.
fix ya face kid.
fix ya face kid.

all his other
styles weren’t around
he was looking for the one
where the smile’s upside down
but the winky-face expression’s
all he had in the house
so he must’ve left his anguish
buried deep underground

so he went to grab a shovel
and he went to grab a drill
and he went to get explosives
so the blast could reveal
the path to the real estate
tasked with the sealing
of his passions and despair
beneath the asthenosphere

it had to be where
it was left, at a depth
where only the lords of treachery
were kept under duress
this is where the bad emotions are left
separated from the surface
so they aren’t in position
to interject

top side’s a comedy
we don’t need the stress
but he’s digging for the bottom
of the barrel for the quest
and he’s checking low and lower
and below anything over
the superheated peridotite
the mantle is enclosed in

how low can he go
and not be low enough
brave face is heretical
when the going’s tough
forward movement’s betrayal
to all he know and love
he’d rather watch the burning core
than bother glowing up

the comedy of his mourning
it gets deeper
the punchline was living
to miss having grief seizures
and the only face he needs
he still sees in his deep sleeping
when she wake up and she whispers
a million unique secrets

and he stay lit. when the day grim.
kinda hates it. fix ya face kid.
and he stay grim. when the day’s lit.
he can’t take it. fix ya face kid.
fix ya face kid.
fix ya face kid.

Khemmeta's music strives to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, or are shouted down when they do. His upcoming EP "When I Get To It" produced by Stephonathan (1/3 of both Pride City Purpose & Chedda Guap Boyz) is silly, nerdy, romantic, anti-nihilistic and defiant. He can't wait for you to get to it this [December]. ... more
